You may have noticed that looked a little different this morning. The site got more than just a facelift and some of these changes are really exciting. Matt Mullenweg announced the changes on his blog, saying the project, code named Calypso, took over 20 months to complete.

Introducing The New

Managing all your WordPress sites is much easier and faster than it was before. There is even a new Mac app that allows you to access your dashboard right from your desktop.

Let’s dive into some of the new features.

Manage Multiple Sites

Moving between your WordPress sites is incredibly easy and fast. Use the drop-down menu to toggle between sites.

Easy Comment Moderation

All of your comments are kept in one place on the right side of your screen, where you can reply to them with just one click. If you have the app downloaded, you’ll get notifications when you get comments.

Social Integration

Social media is also much easier. Connect with Facebook and Twitter and choose to share posts automatically or at specific times with the tap of a button. Now you can drag and drop images or groups of images into your text to create a gallery instead of wrestling with the media hub.

Mobile Management

One of the most exciting features is how easy it is to edit things on a mobile device. Before, just writing up text on a tablet or phone was a pain, but the new structure is optimized so you can edit and contribute on the go.

Under The Hood

All of that is incredibly exciting but what is making tick? Some of the changes include,

  • Sites will now be powered by JavaScript and REST API instead of PHP and MySQL.
  • TNode.js, React, and Flux are taking jQuery’s spot as the third-party library.
  • Code reviews will be done through pull requests and regular hangouts.

Mullenweg made a chart detailing all the changes on his blog post. According to Mullenweg, this is “100 percent open source and open to development in the future.” Check out the code in GitHub and get to work making it the best it can be!
